Current prices for commercial and residential disposal of rubbish and recyclable items at the Southern Landfill.

Waste price increases

Partly due to inflation and to cover the increased costs of Emission Trading Scheme compliance, there will be some price changes from Saturday 1 August. Domestic general waste drop-off at the Southern Landfill will rise from a minimum charge of $10 to $15, and from $160 to $170 per tonne. Domestic green waste charges remain the same at $5 for minimum drop-off. The recommended retail price of official Council rubbish bags will also increase from $2.50 to $2.75 per bag.

How to pay by weight

Follow these steps at the landfill:

  1. Drop any recyclable or reusable items at the Tip Shop and Recycle Centre
  2. Drive slowly onto the weighbridge and stop. A camera will pick up your vehicle number plate. 
  3. Tell the weighbridge operator what type of waste you have e.g. general waste, green waste, hazardous waste, number of fridges and tyres. 
  4. Dispose of your waste. 
  5. When you leave, drive your vehicle slowly onto the weighbridge and stop. A camera will pick up your vehicle number plate. Your vehicle will be weighed again, without waste.
  6. The weighbridge operator will notify you of the charge. Pay the weighbridge operator by card, cash or by account.
  7. Take your receipt as proof of payment. 

The amount you pay will depend on the weight of your rubbish, rather than the type and size of the vehicle you bring it in or where the rubbish is placed. Prices reflect operating costs and include the waste levy required by the Waste Minimisation Act 2008.

Payment

You can pay by account, cash, EFTPOS, or credit card. The landfill does not accept cheques. You can also pay online, see below.

Approval needed before disposal

Prior to disposal, approval from the Operations Manager is required for:

  • Abattoir / Fish
  • Asbestos
  • Clean fill - Special rate
  • Polystyrene

Commercial charges

Commercial charges are for customers that:

  • have an account with the Council landfill
  • deliver waste in a truck (any vehicle that's not a car, van or ute).

The landfill doesn't accept commercial waste and trucks on Sundays.
