Register a new dog

What you need 

Credit or debit card number
You’ll need to pay at the end of the online form.

Depending on your situation, you may also need:

• Desexing certificate or documentation
  This must be from your vet to qualify for a desexing discount. If your dog is not yet desexed, you may provide this later. Read more about desexing your dog.

• Microchip number
  Section 36A of the Dog Control Act 1996 requires all dogs, except working dogs, to be microchipped within 2 months of being registered for the first time. You may provide this number later. Read more about dog microchipping.

• Organisation name and GST number
  Required for working dogs, if applicable.

• Adoption certificate
  Required if you want the discount for dogs adopted from SPCA New Zealand or Helping You Help Animals (HUHA). Read more about dog fees.

• Customs clearance certificate
  Required when registering imported dogs for the first time, these are issued by the Ministry for Primary industries.

When to register

Owners may be charged a penalty if registration fees are not paid on time.

Register your puppies before they turn 3 months old.

If you become the owner of a dog older than 3 months, register them within 14 days.

Moving to Wellington

If you've moved to Wellington from another region:

• If your dog is registered in that region, please email us at dogs@wcc.govt.nz
• If your dog is not registered in that region, then continue on with the online form.

Disability assistance dog

If you have a disability assistance dog, please email us at dogs@wcc.govt.nz

Fees and discounts

The dog registration fee is for the period of 1 year, starting 1 July.

When registering for the first time, your fee depends on:

• when in the year you are registering
• your dog’s details – for example, if it’s a guide dog or if it's adopted.

You can reduce your overall fees by:

• qualifying for Accredited Dog Owner status
• desexing your dog

Dog tags

You will receive your dog tag within 3 weeks. Please attach your tag to your dog's collar immediately.

Our lightweight, metal One Tags are used for the life of your dog and come in 2 sizes: Small (25mm diameter) or Large (35mm diameter).
