Parking sensors

A parking sensor is a small electronic device installed in the ground of each parking bay. It detects and records the time a vehicle arrives and departs in a parking space.

We've introduced about 3500 parking sensors in the metered parking spaces in the central city.

How parking sensors work

The sensors are very accurate and record the exact time a vehicle enters and leaves a parking space. The sensors are synchronised through a central server, which is set to standard New Zealand time. The devices our parking officers use are synchronised with the same server.

Timeframes

All the sensors have been operating since 31 October 2016.
