Tawa Recreation Centre is open after school, on weekends and during holidays.

These hours can vary depending on bookings, please call us to confirm.

Monday–Thursday: 4pm–10pm
Friday: Closed during term times (open Fridays during school holidays)
Saturday: 9am–7pm
Sunday: 9am–6.30pm
Public holidays: Closed

School programmes

Preschool, primary, intermediate and secondary schools can book sessions at the Tawa Recreation Centre. We can align your requests with the health and physical education strands under your school’s curriculum. Outreach programmes are available for selected offerings.

Activities offered are $60 per session and vary depending on the age of the students:

  • Fun Sessions (end of the year only) - inflatables, wheels, co-operative games, and soft equipment
  • Outreach programme (enquire for activity options)

Building Leaders of Tomorrow

This is a 6-week outreach programme for emerging leaders in schools from primary to secondary age. The programme focuses on taha hinengaro skills (mental and emotional wellbeing) , taha wairua skills (spiritual wellbeing) , taha whanua skills (social wellbeing), and taha tinana skills (physical wellbeing).

School booking

Book weekly onsite sessions or one-off events. Enquire with the centre for availability.


We run lots of activities including sports leagues, holiday programmes and birthday parties:

  • Basketball clinic
    4pm–6pm, Mondays. For 7-12 year olds. Learn basic basketball skills such as shooting, dribbling, passing and defence.
  • Basketball league
    4pm–9pm Thursdays. Terms 2, 3 and 4. For Years 7 and 8. 
  • Birthday parties
    Available at weekends for pre-schoolers to 12 year olds. Hire a Party Pilot to facilitate fun activities or run your own party. 
  • Ezy Movers
    9.30am–10.15am Fridays. Improve your cardiovascular fitness, mobility, flexibity and strength in this fun, low impact class.
  • Netball social league (women)
    6.30pm-10pm, Monday and 6pm-10pm, Wednesday.
  • Pickleball
    Avid picklers and newcomers alike are welcome at our all-abilities Sunday Pickleball sessions.
  • Preschool Programme – Gym Jam
    9am–11am Sundays. Bring your pre-schoolers along to our fun indoor play land filled with soft, equipment, activities and wheels.
  • School holiday programmes
    A full care programme for 5 to 12-year-olds.
  • Junior volleyball league (term 1 and 4)
    For Year 5-8. Thursday 4pm-5.30pm

Concession passes

Concession passes are a convenient and cheap option if you attend classes regularly – buy a concession pass. For current LeisureCard members, your discount is automatically applied if it's available on the pass you're buying.

Concession passes are non-refundable, non-transferable, and are valid for two years.

Hiring the recreation centre

The centre can be hired by sports clubs, community groups, and for casual use. The centre can be used for:
