History

At a public meeting in April 1987, Island Bay residents proposed a community centre in Island Bay. A working group was formed, and one year later the Island Bay Community Resource centre opened officially at 163 The Parade.

The centre was popular right from the word go, with community lunches, children’s and adults' craft groups, scrabble sessions and exercise groups held on a weekly basis.

The centre was so popular that it needed to move to a bigger better premises. On 2 October 1992 the centre was re-opened at 137 The Parade, and a community hall was added on 1 March 2003.
