Car park buildings & areas

Finding available car parks

There are electronic signs around the city indicating how many free car parks are available in car park buildings around the city.

Parks Available in Car Park Buildings

Council-owned car parks

Council parking buildings and car parks are clearly marked with blue signs. Prices and payment methods vary, so check the signs when you park.

Central city parks

Civic Square (entrance off Harris Street)

  • Open 6am−12 midnight
  • Daytime (6am−6pm): $4.50 per hour, maximum stay of 2 hours
  • Evening (6pm−12 midnight): $2 per hour, maximum stay of 6 hours
  • Weekend: free, but a maximum stay of 2 hours applies on Saturdays and Sundays, 6am - 6pm

Clifton car park (entrance off The Terrace)

Maximum height: 1.95m

Monday−Friday
6am−12 midnight: $4.50 per hour or part thereof
12 midnight−6am: $2.00 per hour or part thereof
The maximum daily charge during the week is $18 regardless of entry time. Fees are charged per visit – there are no pass-outs.

Saturday - Sunday, public holidays
$2 per hour or part thereof
The maximum daily charge for Saturday, Sunday and public holidays is $6. Fees are charged per visit – there are no pass-outs.

Overnight parking
If you leave your car parked overnight, the overall charge is made up of any of the above fee categories that apply during the total time to a maximum of $18 per weekday or $6 per weekend/holiday parked.

Maximum length of stay: 2 working days
Vehicles left in the car park for more than 2 working days will be removed at the owner’s expense.
Weekends and holidays don’t count against the limit so parking over the weekend (even a long-weekend) is not a problem.

Payment options

Payments can be made by cash, credit/debit card or by EFTPOS at the:

  • pay stations (pay before returning to your vehicle)
  • exit stations via credit/debit card (drive to the barriers, scan your ticket and ‘wave’ your card).

You can also use your chip card at the entry stations instead of taking a ticket – your card becomes your ticket so you need to use the same card for payment when you leave.

Stored value cards are available for $10 at the car park office. These are like “bus cards” for the car park and offer convenience for anyone who prefers to pay week by week rather than day by day. They are also the speediest way in and out of the car park as there is no transaction processing, barcode scanning or printing required.

Reserved parks

Four areas are set aside for reserved parking:

  • Kumutoto (under the Boulcott and Everton overpasses, southernmost section): $245 per month (includes GST)
  • Clifton South (by Kumutoto Lane, central section): $270 per month (includes GST)
  • Clifton Terrace (on Rosina Fell Lane, northernmost section): $340 per month (includes GST)
  • Clifton Covered Area (nested area in the main building): $365 per month (includes GST)

There's high demand for these reserved parks and a long waiting list. If you'd like to join the waiting list, complete the Clifton Car Park Reserved Parking Waitlist form.
