Suburban & inner city collections

When should I put out my rubbish and recycling?

Enter the name of your street below to find out when you need to put out your rubbish and recycling, and the type of recycling to put out.

Your search results will also give you options to download your rubbish and recycling calendar or add it to your iCalendar.

Some general notes:

  • Make sure you sort your recycling: Sorting and Preparing Your Recycling
  • Find out if your item is trash or recyclable treasure with our handy online directory
  • Use the official yellow Council rubbish bags for your rubbish.
  • Wrap any broken glass before putting it in your rubbish bag.
  • Make sure what you put out for collection does not block driveways, footpaths or roads.
  • Any rubbish that is not suitable for collection will be left by Council rubbish collectors. You must remove this rubbish by 7am the next day. There's some types of rubbish we don't collect, see: Unsuitable for Collection
Wheelie recycling bins in Karori.

Put your wheelie bins out close to the kerb

Suburban collections

Put your rubbish and recycling out by 7am on your weekly collection day - this will vary according to the suburb you live in. Don't put it out any earlier than 7pm the evening before your collection day.

Make sure:

  • you place your wheelie bins, bags and crates as close to the kerb as possible
  • wheelie bins are placed where they won't blow over and that the lid is completely closed with the wheelie bin clip firmly attached.

Recycling collection

In the suburbs, recycling is collected weekly from the kerbside on the same day as your rubbish is collected. However, the recycling materials collected are on alternate weeks:

  • one week: paper, metal and plastic - place in wheelie bins or green recycling plastic bags
  • next week: glass - place clean glass only in the 45-litre green recycling crates.

Inner city collections

Given the current situation with plastic bags we are reviewing the whole CBD recycling collection system. This process will take a bit of time, but in the meantime, you can buy a pack of 10 clear plastic bags (5 for glass and 5 for general recycling) at the Council’s Service Centre for $3.10.

Leave rubbish out any night of the week between 5.30pm and 10pm, only using official Council rubbish bags.

Place bags as close to the kerb as possible.

The Council contracts Civic Contractors to collect kerbside rubbish in the inner city.

In the central business district, residents' recycling is collected on Tuesdays after 10pm.

Place your bags out on the footpath between 5.30pm and 10pm every Tuesday night.

All recycling materials must be sorted and placed in clear plastic bags or we won't collect them.

Rubbish and recycling are not collected on Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Good Friday. Instead, the collection is moved to the Saturday that follows. On all other holidays, collection days are as normal.
