Stellin Memorial Park

This memorial to WWII airman James Stellin has stunning 180-degree views over the city to the harbour.

Location: Northland, southern end of Te Ahumairangi Hill (Tinakori Hill).

Entrance and exit points: Vehicle access to the lookout is off Orangi Kaupapa Road. The park can also be reached on walking tracks from Puketiro Avenue and St Mary Street.

Brief description: The park is a memorial to a local hero – World War II airman James Stellin.

The Northern Walkway, which starts at the Botanic Garden, passes through the park then continues north along the ridge to the Te Ahumairangi Hill tracks and the park lookout.

Seats at the lookout are a great spot to take in the stunning 180-degree views over the city to Wellington Harbour and Pencarrow Head, the Brooklyn wind turbine, the Zealandia Sanctuary gully, Wrights Hill and Makara Peak.

Parking: Car park off Orangi Kaupapa Road.

Accessibility: The path to the lookout is very steep and grassed.

Dogs: Dogs must be kept on a leash.

Mountain biking: You can link to Ridgeline Track which takes you through the rest of Te Ahumairangi.

History: Wellingtonian James Stellin died in France in 1944 as he struggled to avoid crashing his damaged Hawker Typhoon fighter-bomber into the village of Saint-Maclou-la-Brière. The village gave him a hero’s funeral and have honoured his memory ever since.
