Location: Western side of Lyall Bay, Queens Drive
Suitable for: Picnics, dog walks, launching boats.
Brief description: The park extends from the road to the sea as far as Te Raekaihau Point. It contains grassed areas with seats and picnic tables, rocky outcrops, and large pohutukawa at the northern end, and a boat launching ramp.
Parking: Off-road parking near picnic area.
Toilets and changing facilities: None.
Accessibility: Easy.
Dogs: Off-leash dog exercise area.
Features: A striking feature is the Rapanui (Easter Island) moai gifted by the president of Chile symbolically acknowledges ‘the ancient Pacific connection between the people of Aotearoa and Rapanui’.
History: The park was named after Theodore (Dorrie) Leslie, custodian of the Wellington Town Hall for 30 years. Dorrie Leslie was a prominent figure in New Zealand athletics and boxing, and an All Black trainer in 1921. In 1932 he was an official starter at the Los Angeles Olympics. He lived in Queens Drive, opposite the park, until he died in 1950.
