Information we can provide

The information in building consents and permits may include:

• completed application forms
• drainage plans
• copies of plans and specifications
• code compliance certificates (for building consents)
• Project Information Memoranda (PIMs).

We can't guarantee that a consent will contain all the information you require.

Consents and permits

Both building consents and building permits refer to the appropriate, official permission to build – the difference relates to when that permission was granted.

'Permit' should only be used to refer to work which started prior to the implementation of 1991 Building Act which took effect on the 1 July 1992. After that date, these permissions are called 'consents' and are subject to Code Compliance Certificates.

Restricted building consents

Some records have access restrictions because personal privacy or commercial sensitivity. This means you need to get permission in writing from the building owner or tenant to request a copy of them.

The written permission must contain:

• the job title of the person who is providing permission
• confirmation of their authority to provide permission (for example, if they are the property manager)
• your name
• organisation logo
• specific building consents that you are being given permission to view
• the reason why you need to see the building consents.

How to order and pay

Use our online search to find all issued building consents/permits we hold for a property.

For a residential property you can either request all issued building consents/permits, or you can request individual consents/permits.

For a commercial property, you can only select individual consents/permits.

Payment and delivery

Once we have received your order and payment, we will email you a link to download the files.

You’ll receive the items you have ordered within 3 working days.

If you are a business customer set up for invoicing with Wellington City Council, let us know at the payment step and we will action your order when we receive it.
