Temporary traffic management

If working on the road will affect general traffic, then you need to organise temporary traffic management.

Definitions

The road includes the carriageway, footpaths or roadside areas.

Traffic includes all road users including pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles.

Standards and requirements

Temporary traffic management must comply with the Code of practice for temporary traffic management (CoPTTM: Part 8 of the Traffic Control Devices manual) by the New Zealand Transport Agency.

Temporary traffic management can only be carried out by warranted site traffic management supervisors (STMS) and traffic controllers trained by accredited trainers. For information about training, visit the New Zealand Transport Agency website.

Temporary traffic management on Wellington City Council roads can only be approved by the Council or a site traffic management supervisor to whom we've delegated authority.
