Failure to comply our terms and conditions may result in a trade permit being revoked and/or an infringement offence.
To use trade parking permits, you must be contracted by a resident, business, or property owner to undertake work. The Council may request evidence that shows a clear operational need for your vehicle to be parked in a restricted parking area and you’re working on a property.
Permit types
Each permit is only valid for a single or half day (depending on the permit type).
A permit is only valid when it’s activated. If a permit is scheduled in advance, it will automatically activate and become valid at the permit start time. If activated after the permit start time, it becomes valid from the time it’s activated.
Suburban trade permit
A suburban trade permit is only valid for parking in coupon parking zones, resident parking areas and time-restricted resident parking zones.
A suburban trade permit is required for parking:
Inner city trade permit
An inner city trade permit is only valid for parking in metered parking spaces and some time-restricted parking spaces within the central area or suburban town centres.
A full day permit is valid for parking between 8am and 6pm. A half day permit is valid for parking 8am–1pm or 1pm–6pm.
An inner city trade permit is required Monday–Sunday, 8am–6pm for parking:
- longer than the time limit in spaces with a limit of 60 minutes or more
- longer than the stated time limit in a Pay by Plate metered parking area.
Where you can’t park
Trade permits do not allow vehicles to park in:
- spaces that have a time limit of 30 minutes or less
- mobility parks
- loading zones
- diplomatic/consular/official staff spaces
- EV charging stations
- clear ways
- motorcycle spaces, including metered and time limited parking
- no stopping or no parking
- car share parks
- bus lanes
- bus stops.
Payment
Payments must be made by credit or debit card via our online platform, Whakatutuki, or over the phone before a permit can be activated. Cash, direct debit or automatic payments are not available as payment options.
Trade permits are not transferable and are non-refundable.
Activated permits
Any permit that is partly used cannot be carried over to another day or time period.
While your permit is active, you can move your vehicle between approved restricted parking areas – so long as you park only in spaces that are valid for your permit type.
Vehicle size
For trade vehicles that take up to three parking spaces, such as a large truck or trade vehicle with a trailer, multiple trade permits must be used. This reflects the number of parking spaces being used by the vehicle at one time.
Vehicle types not eligible for a permit
You can’t use trade permits for non-motorised vehicles (such as caravans), house buses, buses, coaches, motorhomes, motorcycles, and mopeds.
If a trailer is being used for work purposes, it must be attached to the parked towing vehicle and have its own trade permit.
