Hīkoi mō te Tiriti in Pōneke

Plan ahead if travelling around Wellington by road or rail on Tuesday 19 November 2024.

Hīkoi mō te Tiriti is a national event taking place in Aotearoa New Zealand between 10-19 November 2024. Organised by Toitū te Tiriti, the hīkoi began in Northland on Sunday 10 November and is expected to arrive in Wellington on Tuesday 19 November.

Wellington City Council is working with Police, mana whenua and other agencies to support a safe and peaceful event here in Pōneke. The Council’s overall objective is to look after manuhiri, our people and our city and to allow the city to continue to function and Wellingtonians to go about their businesses as usual.

While numbers aren’t confirmed, it is likely we will see thousands of people coming to Wellington to exercise their right to peacefully demonstrate.

The hīkoi arrives in Wellington on Tuesday 19 November 2024, and will travel from Waitangi Park, along the Golden Mile, to Parliament (see below for the timetable on the day). There will be a strong Police presence supported by Māori Wardens.

We are contacting businesses and residents along the route to let them know about the hīkoi.
