Wellington City Archives is a primary information resource for the history of Wellington.

Temporary delays

Customers requesting digital copies of records, including LIMs, are advised that the turnaround time will be up to 10 working days from 21 September until 30 November 2020.

This temporary increase in our service time is while Council makes the transition to a new digitising service for scanning documents.

Please make your applications as soon as possible and we will do our best to ensure you receive timely information. We appreciate your understanding.

Established in 1994, the Archives holds physical and digitised records dating back to 1842 when Wellington became the first site of local government in New Zealand.

As well as providing comprehensive records relating to Wellington’s regulatory history, our collections are a rich resource for anyone researching Wellington’s social history, and show changes in Wellington community and urban development over the past 150 years.

If you are looking to obtain all building permits and consents for your house or another residential property in Wellington, you can request these as a package via the Building Consent Search Service.

Location and services

Do your own historical research

Hopefully, Archives online will meet all your research needs. Where it does not, you are welcome to visit us and search the archives in person. The Archives is free of charge for visitors to complete historical research, however, fees do apply for some services. Please book or call to make an appointment.

Hire a staff member

You can also hire a staff member to undertake your research. The fee is $30 per half hour (payable in advance). To find out how we can help, submit a query through the Archives online contact form.

Copying and photographic reproductions

Staff will advise of the charges for digital copies of documents or any photocopying needed upon request.

Records that are digitised can be viewed in Archives online, however should you require other records to be digitised, or you have specific digitisation requirements for an item identified online, please request this and we will price this on application.

Visiting is by appointment only – this ensures we are as prepared for your visit as we can be.
