Main Road – Cambridge Street Intersection Improvements (Tawa)

We're making it safer for all road users to use the intersection at Main Road, Cambridge Street and Lyndhurst Road in Tawa.

Background

As part of the Council's Road Safety Programme, Council officers have assessed areas with high crashes for safety concerns.

To reduce the number of crashes and make it safe for all users, we're upgrading the intersection to have two zebra crossings on Main Road (north) and Cambridge Street, and speed cushions on all four approaches to the intersection - Main Road (south), Main Road north, Cambridge Street and Lyndhurst Road.

In the last 10 years (2012-2022) 23 crashes were reported at this intersection resulting in 8 injury and 15 non-injury crashes. Public feedback was sought through the Traffic Resolution process and Community Group engagement. Feedback has been incorporated into the design.

Proposed solution

A plan of the proposed changes to the intersection at Main Road, Cambridge Street and Lyndhurst Road in Tawa.
A plan of the proposed changes to the intersection at Main Road, Cambridge Street and Lyndhurst Road in Tawa.

The changes include:

Main Road (North)
Zebra pedestrian crossing, single lane, a speed cushion, signage, road markings and pedestrian crossing lights.

Cambridge Street
Zebra pedestrian crossing, single lane up to the crossing, retain split lane after the crossing, a speed cushion, signage, road markings and pedestrian crossing lights.

Main Road (South) and Lyndhurst Road
Retain median refuge, speed cushions on approach and road markings.

Next steps and important dates

Project construction started on 1st of April 2025 and is planned to be finished in two months. Since this work is weather dependent and in the event of unsuitable weather or other unforeseen circumstances, the work could be delayed.

Benefits of traffic devices

  • Zebra crossings provide a safe, visible priority crossing point for pedestrians.
  • Speed cushions slow traffic approaching an intersection, which is ideal for larger vehicles like buses and emergency services.
  • A median pedestrian refuge provides a safe place for pedestrians to wait when crossing.
  • Signage, road markings and pedestrian crossing lights make intersections and crossings more visible, creating awareness for all users.

Communication and Engagement

1. Two rounds of Traffic Resolution consultation in February 2024 and May 2024.

2. Public engagement and consultation:

  • Engagement meeting with Tawa Volunteer Fire Brigade in February 2024.
  • Meeting with local business in February 2024.
  • Meeting with Tawa Business Community in February 2024.
  • Meeting with Tawa Community Board in March 2024, with regular updates provided afterwards.

3. August 2024 – Comms Advisory on changes to the design resulting from NZTA’s decision not to fund raised traffic calming devices.

4. A 2-weeks letter and a 48 hour letter delivered to property owners, businesses and institutions in March 2025, advising them of the upcoming construction.
