About the project
This project involves building a retaining wall on Mortimer Terrace in Aro Valley. The work will stabilise an unsupported slope in road reserve to the rear of 4 Mortimer Terrace, providing support above the road and footpath. The new retaining wall will increase the resilience and safety of Mortimer Terrace and Honiana Te Puni Street in the event of natural hazards, particularly heavy rainfall.
The Wellington City Council road safety improvement strategy identifies high risk sites on the road network and prioritises them for safety works. Engineers have assessed the risk of land slips in this area and have developed a plan to reduce the risk of harm to road users below the slope.
The work will consist of:
- Traffic management
- Demolition and minor earthworks
- Construction of new retaining wall (steel anchor mesh and shotcrete)
- Reinstatement of drainage services
Timeline, working hours and traffic management
Construction work will begin on 23 June 2025 and is planned for completion by late August/early September 2025.
Working hours will be Monday to Friday from 7am – 4pm.
Traffic management will be in place 24/7 throughout the project. A full road closure will be in place at the lower portion of Mortimer Terrace (#1 to #13, #2 to #10) from the Honiana Te Puni Street end for the duration of the project. Resident access will be maintained via Durham Crescent, but it will be restricted at certain times of the working day. Pedestrian thoroughfare will remain open at all times.
We are working hard to keep disruption to a minimum during this project. We appreciate the patience of the local community as we get this important mahi done.
Impact on parking
Parking between Honiana Te Puni Street intersection and #10 Mortimer Terrace will be reduced to enable resident vehicle movement. Construction vehicles will occupy parts of lower Mortimer Terrace during working hours.
