UNESCO City of Film

In October 2019, Wellington received official designation as a UNESCO City of Film.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development.

The cities that make up this network work together towards a common objective: placing creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their local development plans and cooperate actively at an international level.

The UNESCO City of Film project offers a platform for Wellington’s visual storytellers to connect the capital’s culture and place with the international creative community.

As an ambassador to Wellington UNESCO City of Film, the Mayor works to promote the project and ensure the City supports its facilitation and implementation.

Wellington’s overall vision is to be an incubator of creativity, exploration and innovation, as well as to create a sustainable future in which the New Zealand’s screen industry can thrive and grow.
