What is a BID

Established in 2013, 613 businesses are involved in six BIDs across Wellington City’s suburbs. The combined capital value is estimated at $1.4 billion (as at January 2025).

A Business Improvement District (BID) is a mutual partnership between a local authority and a local business community, within a defined geographical area, typically a town centre, commercial precinct, or business hub.

The aim is to develop projects and services that benefit the trading environment and support economic growth of the business centre in ways that also aligns with Wellington City Council objectives. These improvements often go beyond what the council already provides, such as street beautification, events and advocacy on behalf of local businesses.

Through this mutual partnership, BIDs act as a voice for local businesses, fostering a more vibrant, attractive and resilient business district that benefits traders, customers and the wider community.

BIDs are supported by a targeted rate, levied on and collected from non-residential properties within a defined boundary. BIDs operate under the Wellington City Council BID Policy.

Every two years we hold a BID summit. This is an opportunity for BID members to hear about BID developments, successes and opportunities.
