Creative Communities Scheme

This scheme supports and encourages local arts activities.

Help us decide on arts funding for our creative capital

Each year Creative New Zealand provides funding to Wellington City Council to distribute through grants via the Creative Communities Funding Scheme. We are seeking new members for our local Creative Communities panel. Our panel is made up of individuals working in the cultural and arts sectors in the city. Our panel members have knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following areas- youth arts, music, ngā toi Māori, Pacific arts, theatre, visual arts, craft/object art, etc.

We are also super keen to have young people involved in our panel. We are looking for people under 24 years (including high school students) that have been involved in arts, through dance, drama or any creative activity.

As well as being passionate about the arts you will need to be digitally literate and be able to access the internet through your own device. We have two funding rounds every year, closing at the end of August and February. Panel members generally commit for a couple of years and we are looking to recruit five or six new members.

In addition to attending the committee meeting panel members read applications online (there can be 40 or 50 applications), mark and send scores back prior to the meeting- this can take a day or two. The panel meetings are held on a weekday (twice a year in early April and October) these meetings generally last for four hours- half a day. An honorarium (payment) is available for panel members for two days, this is a payment that recognises the level of work and expertise required and that as a panel member you may need to go along and see some of the things we support.

To nominate yourself you will need to send a short nomination email outlining the areas of interest, expertise and skills you could contribute, including a short CV. Criteria

Projects seeking funding from this scheme should meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Participation – the project creates opportunities for local communities to engage with, and participate in local arts activities.
  • Diversity – the project supports the diverse artistic and cultural traditions of local communities.
  • Young people – the project enables and encourages young people (under 18 years) to engage with and participate in the arts.

To be eligible for funding, projects must take place within the Wellington city rate-paying area (includes Tawa, but not Lower and Upper Hutt or Porirua). Projects already receiving Creative New Zealand funding are not eligible. Contact a Funding Advisor if you intend to apply to the Creative Communities Scheme and any CreativeNZ fund.

This scheme is a partnership between Wellington City Council and Creative New Zealand.

Every year Creative New Zealand provides money to councils to support local arts activities. Any individual, group or organisation can apply.

Various types of projects are considered for these grants, such as workshops, performances, exhibitions, short-term arts events, and arts-related promotional activities.
