Diverse communities

The Council has programmes and projects to support and celebrate our diverse communities.

The Council supports and celebrates our diverse communities in a range of ways.

  • Wellington City Libraries have lots of material to help people learn English, and a growing collection of books, newspapers and DVDs in other languages. Their Multicultural Community Customer Specialist works to improve services to speakers of other languages.
  • We provide funding to support projects and events that recognise and celebrate Wellington’s diverse communities. See our Funding page for more information.
  • We support and promote events of all sizes in Wellington city, including Diwali, the Japan Festival, and Māori Language Week. See our Events page for more information.
  • We provide “welcome kits” for refugees settling in Wellington. For more information you can phone the Contact Centre on 04 499 4444.
