Bike ramps – also sometimes called bike/cycle channels – are used here and overseas. They are narrow stainless steel channels that are fitted to the ground alongside stairs.
Walking alongside, people can use the ramps to more easily push their bike up, or roll it down.
Ramps have so far been installed in the following places:
- Hankey Street steps (lower + upper)
- Lavaud Street steps
- Stanley Street steps
- Douglas Street steps
- Henry Street steps
- Oriental Terrace steps (lower + upper)
- Hawker Street steps
- Leveson Street steps
- Strathmore Avenue steps
- Hood Street steps
- Drummond Street steps
- Walden Street steps
The ramps are designed and made in Wellington by AE Tilley Group, and were jointly funded by Waka Kotahi (51%) and the Council. In many of the locations, ramps were installed in response to public requests.
