The first of these has been installed on the waterfront on the outside of the Bike Space repair workshop container near Te Papa. The stand has bike tools and a pump, is free to use, and accessible at all times.
The new-style stands have a number of advantages. They:
- are locally made (no longer imported)
- are made from stainless steel (rather than mild steel) so more resilient in New Zealand coastal conditions and far less prone to rust
- have interchangeable tools – which means a single tool can be replaced if necessary
- have space for additional tools if required
- can be free standing or mounted on a wall, container or building
- have been manufactured in components so it is easy for contractors to replace a damaged component rather than the whole unit, reducing repair downtime
- have instructions for how to use the pump on the top of each unit
- are substantially cheaper and better than their imported predecessor.
