Safety Points

A Safety Point is an intercom system on a pole that anyone can use to call for help - 24/7.

A yellow intercom safety system on a pole in Cuba Street, Wellington.

These points are a quick and visible way to access help. Three Safety Points are being installed in three different places in Pōneke’s CBD.

  • Cuba Mall – (near 117 Cuba Street)
  • Te Aro Park (19 Dixon Street)
  • Courtenay/Allen Street (35 Courtenay Place)

Anyone who needs assistance or is worried about something they’ve seen while out and about can go to a Safety Point, push a button, and be connected to one of our safety operators for immediate help – any time of day or night.

For any emergencies or situations requiring urgent assistance, Wellingtonians need to call emergency services directly on 111.

The operators are based in Wellington City Council’s central CCTV monitoring base and will be able to see the person who’s requested help via the Council’s existing CCTV network.

This two-way communication system enables real-time support and means safety operators can keep an eye on people requesting help and reassure them.

Safety Points have been installed in response to public feedback about feeling unsafe at night in the city,

They have been developed using research from overseas showing similar tools have been effective.
