Strathmore 44

In 2015 Wellington City Council, along with Kainga Ora (formerly Housing New Zealand), the New Zealand Police and the Strathmore Park Community, starting working together to support a community-led rejuvenation of Strathmore Park.

Background

The name comes from the #44 bus route that ran through the area (recently changed to 12). The project works with the Strathmore Park community to identify strengths, challenges and opportunities. From May 2017 to May 2020, Strathmore 44 had a dedicated Community Development worker working with the community to help turn ideas into action.

In 2018 we asked people who work, live and play in Strathmore Park what would make Strathmore Park even better? More than 40 people responded with ideas ranging from cultural groups to toilet facilities at Helicopter Park, and even a regular local market.

We held two Community Action Hui which brought together more than 30 people. who are taking action including:

connecting isolated older people in the community
resurrecting the gardens at Kahurangi School
developing and presenting a petition to have toilets and drinking fountains at Walden Street Park (Helicopter Park) – these will be installed in 2020.
the creation of a regular Te’ vae vae group
Summer local Touch Rugby competition - Kairangi Touch
Free cooking classes
Eastern Suburbs Community Education at Scots College providing free Te Reo and beginner computing classes.

How to be involved

Raukawa Reserve Improvement Project

There has been lots of activity at the Raukawa Reserve; natives planted behind the centre, the planter boxes moved, and drainage has been put in making the reserve much drier and usable during the wet winter months. Thanks to the work of the local community, Department of Corrections, Wellington City Council, and the Raukawa Community Centre staff.

Residents Association

The Residents Association is open to all residents of Strathmore Park. We welcome everyone to come bring up any local issues, ideas or concerns to us either via email strathmoreparkra@gmail.com or at a monthly meeting.
Meetings are held every second Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm at Strathmore Park Community Centre.
