The centre was built as a memorial and opened in 1958. The memorial was proposed by the Returned Servicemen's Association (RSA), and it was a recipient from the Government's post-war 'pound for pound' war memorial fund. The RSA continued to contribute as a financial contributor and one of the main organising forces until 1992.
The Northland Memorial Community Centre has a Memorial Room upstairs that displays the history of the centre from the end of the Second World War to the present day, and celebrates the lives and achievements of local Northlanders.
