Joe Aspell was a former City Councillor and company director who left part of his estate to help young people in the city. Since 1990 the trust helped local organisations and projects and was administered by Wellington City Council.
Donations were made for the purpose of providing for "the care, benefit, maintenance, upbringing, education, advancement in life and general welfare of young people who reside in Wellington and who are socially disadvantaged".
The Joe Aspell Trust met on 7 June 2024 and agreed to the transfer and gifting of the fund to the Nikau Foundation who will establish the Joe Aspell Fund, which will reflect the original trust deed by making distributions in line with the Joe Aspell Trust and its associated priorities and intended beneficiaries.
