An inner-city garden with vegetable beds and a young orchard, this garden is also part of the community composting hubs trial. Join us for a show and tell, including our CarbonCycle bins and innovative 'no nails' raised beds built from scrap pallets.

Massey University Māra Kai, Massey Wellington Campus

The Earthworms is a gardening club that aims to foster a sense of community while promoting sustainable practices related to gardening, composting, and environmental awareness. We've created a small community garden at Massey University where members can gather for regular working bees, plan projects, and socialise. With our activities, we try to provide opportunities for young people to connect, learn from each other, and enjoy shared interests in gardening and environmental conservation.

Innermost Gardens

Ki hea | Where Lawson Place, Mt Victoria
Nestled against the Town Belt, Innermost Gardens was established 2006 to ‘grow community through hands in the soil’. You are welcome to join us between 10am and 12pm for one of our regular working bees or wander through at your leisure. We have communal gardens, fruit trees, allotments, and community composting. We’re also a good spot for a picnic.

Te Ngaehe o Rau Hīnau - Pukehinau māra kai

Ki hea | Where Corner of Aro Street & Ohiro Road, Aro Valley
Pukehinau is a Te Toi Mahana social housing complex. Te Ngaehe o Rau Hīnau is managed by Kaicycle Urban Farm as a tenant-led community resilience project. Visit us on Open Sunday to find out more.

We are also holding the final workshop in our Sunday Kai Sessions, 2pm - 4pm – ‘Growing Seeds into Feeds’. Join us on the Pukehinau lawn to learn about correct harvesting, cooking and tips for using scraps/waste with Seeds to Feeds. Afternoon tea included. This is a free event.

Island Bay and Berhampore Community Orchard

Ki hea | Where beside 559 Adelaide Road, Berhampore

We’ll have a variety of activities going on between 2pm and 5pm. Please note the shorter time to other weekends.

Come along to our warm welcome and join in a working bee, find out about making liquid fertiliser, get to know our bees, and explore the orchard. Bring the tamariki along to have a run around in this great space. We’ll be finishing with shared kai so please bring a plate of food to share. We're aiming to make this a zero waste event, so try some of these ideas here for inspiration.

On the day

2pm - Welcome to the orchard
2.30pm - Working bee start, have a look around the orchard
4pm - Liquid fertiliser mini workshop (bring your own container, we will have some for you to take away too)
4.30pm - Shared kai
5pm - Open day finishes.

About us

We’ve been growing community since 2010 and have created a shared space with more than 80 fruit trees, a composting hub, beehives and a vegetable garden. Join us for regular shared gardening and harvesting, and community events. Or come and read a book, walk your dog, hug a tree, or have a picnic.

Hataitai Community Garden

Ki hea | Where 112 Waipapa Road, Hataitai
The Hataitai Community Garden is a small garden in the green space of the Hataitai Centre (former Hataitai Bowling Club). We have 5-6 garden beds and community compost bins. This year we have had a stellar tomato and pumpkin harvest. If the weather is fine on the day we will be painting up some new signage for the compost bins and turning over the gardens for some winter crops. There will be tea and coffee served from the Hataitai Centre.

Lyall Bay Community Garden

A small communal garden in suburban Lyall Bay, supported by Lyall Bay Community Church, we offer a space for people to work together, share in the harvest, learn from each other, enjoy the garden, and rest. We also host afterschool kids’ gardening. We value garden practices that care for our environment, such as permaculture and drought resistant planting, and we engage in financially sustainable practices such as seed raising, natural soil amendments, and zero waste.

Miramar Prison Garden

Ki hea | Where 1 Main Rod, Miramar
Located at the northern end of the Miramar Peninsula on the site of the old Wellington Prison gardens, we have a long and interesting history. Today we provide a place for local people to come together – to grow produce, but also to participate in cultural, social and educational activities. Open Sunday activities will include guided tours of the historic garden, a simple koha BBQ, gardening and food workshops, an ‘Eat the Garden’ demonstration with Travelling Kitchen, and family-friendly activities.

Miramar & Maupuia Community Centre

Miramar Maupuia Community Garden is a nurturing space cultivated by and for the community. Nestled within the heart of Te Motu Kairangi, it serves as a sanctuary where individuals come together to grow fresh produce, share knowledge, and foster connections. From aromatic herbs to seasonal vegetables, this garden provides a sustainable oasis where individuals of all ages and backgrounds can engage in the joy of gardening.

Te Kawakawa Commons

Ki hea | Where 46 Hornsey Road, Melrose
Te Kawakawa Commons is a small community garden and recreation area created to provide a sheltered and peaceful sanctuary for local people and wildlife. Located on a walkway track to the top of Mt Albert and the Southern Walkway, local residents have cleared blackberry to plant vegetable gardens, fruit trees and native vegetation. Seating and a network of short tracks complete the transformation. Monthly working bees vary but include weeding, gardening, planting natives in winter, and track building. Whether you want to follow the follow the track to the top or not on Open Sunday, you’re welcome to come and relax with a muffin and a cuppa, and maybe adopt a baby succulent.

Tawa Community Garden

Ki hea | Where Coronation Park, 21-29 Oxford Street, Tawa

We’re combining Open Sunday with a working bee and a BBQ to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. Located in Coronation Park, this garden is planned and run by a group of volunteers, but you don’t need to be an experienced gardener to join one of our regular working bees. Visit us on Open Sunday with your questions, especially about our in-ground method for composting garden waste. The BBQ will be held 1pm - 3pm.

Kai Hapori Whānui ki Linden

Come visit us between 1pm and 3pm (please note the shorter time to other weekends). Afternoon tea provided.

This productive community garden has been created in stages since 2022 by the Vulnerable Support Charitable Trust, with the support of local businesses, community organisations, and schools. We offer a space for our community to connect, especially older folk and tamariki, as they tend the raised garden beds and enjoy produce. You can find us next door to the Linden Community Centre.
