With e-scooters and e-bikes available for hire, it’s easy to make low carbon transport choices in Wellington.
Scooters have become a popular way to make short trips since the introduction of public e-scooter share services in 2019. With the addition of e-bikes, these modes provide more options to go further in the city. They’re cheap to ride, environmentally friendly, fun to use, and can provide health benefits.
The e-scooters and e-bikes are hireable, locked and unlocked via a mobile application (app).

Using e-scooters or e-bikes is a great way to get places, but it’s important to always ride in a safe and considerate way.

Brief overview of micro mobility in Wellington City
- In 2019 Wellington City Council supported an 18-month trial of an e-scooter scheme. The trial finished on 31 December 2020.
- In March 2021 local providers Flamingo and Beam were granted three-year licences to operate.
- In December 2022, Kōrau Tūāpapa, our Environment and Infrastructure Committee, unanimously approved trialling a public e-bike share scheme.
- In 2023, the licences to operate and code of practice were amended to reflect the Committee decision and include permissions to operate e-bikes on a trial basis.
- In April 2024, the current Micromobility providers were approved to continue to operate in Wellington at Kōrau Tūāpapa, Environment and Infrastructure Committee (9.98MB PDF), with the current licences coming up for renewal in March 2026.
- On 30 August 2024, Wellington City Council suspended Beam’s licence to operate.
