Alcohol promotions

There are strict rules that limit how alcohol can be advertised or promoted.

Under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, you're not allowed to promote alcohol in the course of your business that:

  • encourages excessive drinking
  • offers discounts on alcohol of 25% or more off the normal retail price, unless the offer is:
    • within the licensed premises (and can't be seen or heard about from outside the premises)
    • in the catalogue or price list (for an off-licence that has remote sales (for example, over the internet and phone)
  • offers alcohol that is free of charge, unless the offer is:
    • for complimentary sampling within an off-licence premises
    • within a  licensed premises (and can't be seen or heard about from outside the premises)
  • offers a prize or other goods, on the condition that alcohol is bought – unless the offer is only promoted and advertised within the licensed premises
  • promotes or advertises alcohol that will have special appeal to people under 18 years of age.
