Mayor Celia Wade-Brown and Andrew Barr, 2016
Both being capital cities of Australasia and sharing strong economies, tourism and creative industries, Wellington and Canberra are natural trading partners. On July 6 2016, Australian Capital Territory chief minister Andrew Barr signed an agreement with Wellington mayor Celia Wade-Brown in Wellington, while on July 7, Wellington Chamber of Commerce president Peter Cullen and Canberra Business Chamber chief executive Robyn Hendry signed an MoU.
The chambers will focus on promoting trade, tourism and business between the regions, including sharing information on trade, economic and technology information, and will promote seminars, forums and exhibitions in each other's region.
It is anticipated that trade connections between Wellington and Canberra will become stronger now that Singapore Airlines has begun its 'Capital Express' route flights four times a week from September 21 2016. The flights which each provide 20 tonnes of freight capacity will provide significant opportunities to grow two-way trade and investment between Wellington, Canberra and Singapore, as well as the rest of the Asian market. The flights also offer significant tourism opportunities for Asian and European visitors to Australia and New Zealand.
