Street innovations challenge

Supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies and Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI) as part of the Bloomberg Initiative for Cycling Infrastructure (BICI).

Two cyclists riding down Adelaide Road in Newtown.

The Council and the Global Designing Cities Initiative are seeking designs for cycleway separation for Wellington's streets, making them friendlier to pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport.

Prizes

Designers with winning proposals will receive:

  • First place: $5,000, with a chance to see your design brought to life on Wellington streets
  • Second place: $2,500
  • Third place: $1,000

All winners will have their designs published on our website.

Refer to the full design brief, design guidance and technical requirements when participating in this challenge.

Submit your designs

The winning design will move forward to the prototyping stage, giving the winning team the chance to:

  • Collaborate with local manufacturers to refine and create prototypes.
  • Work with the Council to review the prototype.

Your finalised prototype may be tested on one of our cycleways. We’ll monitor its performance, checking for durability, safety, and community feedback.

Key dates

  • Competition opens – Monday 15 July 2024
  • Competition closes – midnight Sunday 29 September 2024
  • Winners announced – November 2024
