Discover something new at our Wellington Recreation Centres

Looking for a new hobby or unique way to get active? Our Recreation Centres have a range of exciting programmes for seniors right through to toddlers. Check them out in the story below.

Chase Tag   

Kilbirnie Recreation Centre | Fridays, monthly | Junior league Year 6 - Year 11 |  Adult 15-years+  & casual sessions  

Chase Tag is a unique sport that combines aspects of parkour and tag. Players begin the round at opposite ends of a square known as 'The Quad', which is filled with various obstacles that players move over, under and through using parkour skills.  

Kilbirnie Recreation Centre is officially licensed by World Chase Tag and offer competitive leagues for kids and casual drop-in sessions for adults to give it a try. We have trained and qualified coaches to help guide you through movements and make sure you have a fun and safe experience.

Gym Jam 

All rec centres | Various times | Free for under 1 year and $5 for 1-5 years 

Gym Jam is a safe, friendly and fun indoor playland filled with soft play equipment and a bouncy castle for your preschooler to enjoy. These programmes encourage motor skill development and are a great social environment for your preschooler to gain confidence. No need to book, just turn up on the day. Children must be supervised at all times. 

Ki-o-rahi lines on a court

Permanent Ki-o-Rahi lines 

Ki-o-rahi is a traditional Māori ball game based on the legend of Rahitutakahina and Tiarakurapakewai. This sport is more than a game – it’s all about learning the story of ancestors, language and culture. Ākau Tangi Sports Centre is now the first indoor sports venue with permanent Ki-o-Rahi markings and is now available for court hire.

Low-impact football 

Ākau Tangi | Tuesdays, 12.30pm - 1.30pm | $4.50 per class 

Whether you have limited mobility, are returning from injury or looking for a fun way to get active and be social, these friendly sessions are perfect for anyone wanting to give football a go. Low-impact football is a walking only session designed for adults to experience and enjoy football without high-impact.  

These are casual drop-in sessions that do not require a booking. Simply turn up on the day and play!

Building Leaders of Tomorrow

Nairnville & Tawa Rec Centre | Term time | School aged 

This is a six-week outreach programme for emerging leaders in schools, from primary to secondary age. The programme focuses on taha hinengaro skills (mental and emotional wellbeing), taha wairua skills (spiritual wellbeing), taha whanua skills (social wellbeing), and taha tinana skills (physical wellbeing). The emerging leaders learn new skills that will guide them as future senior leaders through team challenges, problem-solving games, nature projects and more.

Have a Go!  

Ākau Tangi Sports Centre | Monday, 10.30am - 11.30am | All ages  

This programme is for people with an intellectual (learning) or physical disability.  

Groups play a range of different sports and activities that cater to all abilities and physical levels. Each session is customised based on the number of attendees, their abilities and their experience.  

Have a Go is led by Jacob, who used to participate in the sessions, and since then has been hired by the Council to run our ‘Have a Go’ sessions.  

Home Education 

This programme provides home-schooled children the opportunity to supplement their physical education. There are four groups to choose from each week, which is split by age group. The groups are centred around Sport New Zealand’s ‘Physical Literacy approach’.   

Akau Tangi cater for all school ages, from 5 years through to 18 years.
