There’s noel time like the holly-day hours 

And that’s a wrap! 2024 is almost over and there’ll be some changes to Council services over the next few weeks so that kaimahi can recharge thems-elves.

We’ve made this nice list to keep Pōneke informed of our holly-day hours, as well as some other handy info – so make sure you check it twice!

 
  • To report any Council-related incidents use the FixIt App or send an email to info@wcc.govt.nz. If your query is urgent, please call the Contact Centre on (04) 499 4444.

 
  • Christmas Day, Wednesday 25 December 2024: No collections, please put rubbish and recycling out on Saturday 28 December.

  • Boxing Day, Thursday 26 December 2024: Collections will happen as usual.

  • New Year’s Day, Wednesday 1 January 2025: No collections, please put rubbish and recycling out on Saturday 4 January 2025.

  • Thursday 2 January 2025: Collections will happen as usual.

  • Please note: To allow for set up of the Courtenay Place New Year’s Eve Carnival there will be some earlier collections for rubbish, recycling and cardboard on Tuesday 31 December. Residents and businesses are advised to put out items to be collected by 10am on Courtenay Place from Cambridge Terrace to Taranaki Street, and adjacent areas including Blair Street and Allen Street, Forresters Lane, and Tory Street from Wakefield Street to Forresters Lane.

 
  • Metered on-street parking is free and there are no time limits around Wellington on all public holidays (25-26 Dec and 1-2 Jan). Clifton and Tory Street car parks will have normal rates apply on public holidays.

 
  • The Southern Landfill and Transfer Station will be closed Christmas Day (25 Dec) and New Year’s Day (1 Jan), and open normal trading hours the rest of the time. Public holidays are a busy time at the Southern Landfill, so be prepared for possible delays.

 
  • The Tip Shop will be closed Christmas Day (25 Dec) and New Year’s Day (1 Jan), and open normal trading hours the rest of the time.

 
  • Harbourside Market will be operating as usual on Sundays during the festive period, but with fewer stallholders. 

 
  • Metlink has free travel for passengers travelling on bus and train services on Christmas Day, with some exclusions. Check metlink.org.nz for details.

 
  • Remember, when the festivities are coming to an end, you can drop-off your Christmas tree at the Southern Landfill Recycle Centre for free. Drop-off from 26 December to Wellington Anniversary weekend, and your old tree will be turned into Capital Compost – just make sure you remember to remove all your decorations beforehand.

 
  • Visit the holiday hours section of our website at wellington.govt.nz/holiday-hours for all changes to services – including Wellington City Libraries, Recreation Centres and Community Pools.
