Friday Five: Explore Miramar

Tucked away in the eastern suburbs, Miramar is a thriving hub for movie lovers, with the iconic Roxy Cinema and Wētā Workshop. It also boasts top-notch eateries, second-hand treasure troves and beautiful walkways – perfect for a day trip out.

We’ve put together five things you can do to explore the area.

1. Release your inner film buff

See blockbuster movies come to life by visiting the renowned Wētā Workshop, where you can explore the Wētā Cave to see movie props, or do a tour of the workshop itself to get a behind-the-scenes look at how the team works.

You can also sit back and relax by catching a film at the iconic Roxy Cinema. The building is an experience of it’s own, with 1930s Art Deco-inspired architecture and interior.

2. Ride your way round Miramar

Jump on your bike and head out to Miramar for an adventure. Why not try out some mountain biking around Centennial Reserve? It’s an easy gradient where you zig-zag through well-established native bush. This track is great for beginner bikers and for parents with baby buggies. If you are wanting to teach your kids how to ride a bike before you hit the tracks – Holy Cross School and Miramar School are supported by Bikes in Schools and have plenty of great tracks to learn on.

You can cruise to and from Miramar and the city on the new Cobham Drive bike path and crossing, and catch some scenic views. On your journey, take a glance at the Wellywood sign that marks the entrance to Miramar.

3. Eat your heart out

There’s plenty of places to wet your whistle in Miramar, from Double Vision Brewery to Park Kitchen. Or, try local favourite Nicoletta’s for freshly baked goods, and Bongusto Pasta Workshop & Cafe for authentic Italian food.

4. Explore treasure troves

It’s a local secret that Miramar has amazing second-hand shops, where you can often find wonderful and unique treasures! We recommend checking out Mary Potter Hospice shop, Salvation Army Family store and Opportunity for Animals on your next trip in.

5. Soak in views of the city

Starting in Miramar, the beautiful Eastern Walkway takes you along the scenic route from the southern end of Miramar peninsula and out to Pass of Branda. Along the walk there are Māori historical sites, as well as the Ataturk Memorial and spectacular views of Wellington harbour.

Why not head out on this awesome walk and pack a picnic for the journey?
