Friday Five: Explore Tinakori village

Just a stone’s throw away from our city centre is the quaint Tinakori village, full of unique shops and eateries. It also happens to be close to one of the city’s gems, Wellington Botanic Garden ki Paekākā, which makes it the perfect place to visit for a day trip.

We’ve put together five things you can do to explore the area.

1. Grab a coffee, a pint, or a meal!

The village has some hidden eateries that locals love. Explore the alleyway to Goods manufactory and cafe and nab yourself a delicious baked treat and coffee. Pop into Leafee cafe for a meal, put your feet up with a pint at Sprig and Fern – then round it off with a perfectly crafted chocolate at La Petite Chocolate. There’s plenty to pick from – you’ll be spoilt for choice!

2. Go treasure hunting

From antique stores to a designer second-hand boutique, there’s plenty to pick from on your next shopping trip! Why not head to one of the many antique stores, where you can find jewellery, ceramics and more. Or pop next door to find some second-hand designer clothing. You can even go hunting for wedding dresses at the Hello Romeo bridal store.

3. Enjoy the flowers

Stop and smell the roses! As you walk down Tinakori Road, keep an eye out for charming hanging baskets in the village. Then, continue your trip to the Botanic Garden ki Paekākā where you can wander through and see some amazing blooms. Or, if you want to take home a plant or a bouquet, head to Flowers Rediscovered Florist.

4. Treat yourself at spa/hairdresser

Need a bit of you time? Why not head to the village for a little pampering. Visit So You hairdressing or check out Groom Barbers on your way through, or book in at Beautique Skin and Body Therapy for a spa treatment.

5. Ride or walk around the area

There’s plenty of beautiful walks to check out, including the City to Sea Walkway through the Botanic Gardens via Bolton Street cemetery.

It’s easy to get there under your own steam, as Tinakori village is just a short walk or ride from Lambton Quay and The Terrace. With the new separated uphill bike lane up from Bowen Street to the gardens, you can easily make the trip by bike before you explore the village. There are also regular buses if it’s more your style and making it easy to get back if you find yourself laden with goods by the end of your day!

Watch out each Friday for a fun list of five great activities to do, places to explore, or things to discover in our awesome city.
