Friday Five: What to do over Wellington Anniversary weekend

How good is a long weekend? Make the most of it by exploring our awesome city and checking out what’s on offer. Here’s five things that might tickle your fancy.

1. Pack a picnic and enjoy live music at the Botanic Garden

The iconic Gardens Magic Concert Series has been filling the summer nights with sounds from some of the capital’s top talent! There’s an awesome line-up this weekend from 8pm to 9.15pm. Grab a good picnic spot for the show, then stay after dark to take in the light display created by MJF Lighting between 9pm–10.30pm. Find out more on Our Wellington

2. Catch a performance on the Wellington waterfront 

Head on down to the waterfront for a stroll in the sun, lunch at one of the many bars and restaurants, and catch a performance from the Summer Sampler! It’s on every weekend in January and February, and there will be a bunch of incredible artists ready to entertain in different spots on the waterfront. Get more information on our website

3. Treat yourself on the next Welly Walks 

Start your morning off with a walk to see epic views and nab yourself a treat along the way! Welly Walks is on this Saturday 21 January from 9am, with a box of goodies from Tomboy bakery hidden on the walk of the week. Read more about the walk on Our Wellington

4. Get up close with marine wildlife  

Come on down to Taputeranga Marine Reserve and join Mountains to Sea Wellington for a free summer community snorkel event on Saturday 21 January from 10am to 3pm. You can take a peek at the fascinating array of marine organisms that live out of sight, just under the surface. Local ocean experts will be on dry land to share their knowledge, and there will be experienced snorkel guides to help underwater. Gear is provided at no cost. 5. Learn about the history of Wellington

Join a tour through the Bolton Street Cemetery to learn the stories of our early settlers. It’s on every day during the long weekend from 2pm to 3.30pm. The tour starts and finishes at Te Whare Taonga o te Urupā  Bolton Street Cemetery Museum opposite Sofitel Wellington on Bolton Street. Book your spot on Eventfinda
