Back to work: Your ideal Welly lunch break

How often do you find yourself skipping your lunch break or eating at your desk while the sun is shining? Don't waste Welly on a good day – spend your time out and about in our creative capital where people and nature thrive. Here are some ideas to make the most of your lunch break in Pōneke.

1. Jog down the waterfront

Strap on those running shoes and boost your serotonin with a good run along Wellington’s waterfront.

Luckily for us, we can access the waterfront from many different points in the city. It’s the perfect way to let out some steam and get some fresh air – all while taking in some great views.

2. Get a delicious sweet treat

If you need a pick-me-up or something refreshing after being inside for the morning, there’s nothing a scoop of ice-cream or gelato can’t fix. From Duck Island on Cuba Street to Gelissimo Gelato on Taranaki Wharf and the Kaffee Eis Kiosk by the TSB Arena – you’ll feel happier after a stroll and a sweet treat.

3. Take your togs to work

Tis the season for a lunchtime dip! Start bringing your togs to work and make a routine of it. The water at Thorndon Pool is super inviting on summer days but if it gets a little chilly you don’t need to worry - the pool is heated. This historic pool also has a neat history.

4. Wander through the gardens

We are lucky to have 25-hectares of beautiful gardens tucked away in Kelburn – a stone's throw away from the CBD! You could take a walk through the Lady Norwood Rose Garden, stroll around the duck pond, or even just make the walk from the Terrace or Bowen Street to the gardens before looping back.

The food scene is strong in Wellington, with our little capital packed to the brim with wonderful cafes, restaurants, and bars. Take a trip down a foodie lane in the city when you’re needing a change of scenery from work, with our list of top five favourite laneways.

6. Enjoy some retail therapy

One of the best parts about being in a walkable city is the ability to jump from shop to shop. There are plenty of boutiques, local designers and specialty shops for when you need a bit of retail therapy on your lunch break or after work. Here are some spots to check out around Victoria Street.

  • Trade Aid – Wholesale beautiful craft and organic food products from around the world.
  • Vessel – New Zealand made pottery and ceramics.
  • Yu Mei – A luxury leather goods label.
