Shell Lane changes will make the street safer for everyone

Shell Lane off The Terrace will soon have a new two-tier bike shelter, more space for pedestrians, a little more motorbike parking, better lighting and improved security.

For the duration of the road works, access in and out of Clifton Terrace car park will be via Dalmuir Lane (which is usually just the way out).

Work, which includes some kerb changes and traffic management on this part of The Terrace, began this week and will take about six weeks. It is being done now while things are still relatively quiet to minimise disruption.

Until about the end of January access in and out of Clifton Terrace car park will be via Dalmuir Lane (which is usually just the way out).

An electronic sign is in place to remind people coming from the motorway that they need to turn a little earlier than usual.

The new bike shelter, which is similar to the one in Grey Street, will have covered parking for 24 bikes. The design of new racks, which are now made locally by Tilley Group Ltd in Rongotai, is being constantly tweaked and improved in response to feedback.

This one for instance will have slightly more space between and above the bike bays to make it easier to park larger and wider bikes. It will also have internal lighting and two CCTV cameras.

The changes being made will make this area safer for everyone.

Two new streetlights are being installed – one at each end of the lane.

A third CCTV camera at the end of the lane will provide greater security around the existing motorbike parking bay, which is being extended by about 2m, and in Rosina Fell Lane adjacent to the car park.

Work hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm.
