Family Day at City Gallery is back!

There will be heaps of fun, free, family-friendly activities happening this Saturday 1 May at City Gallery Wellington’s Family Day.

City Gallery's Head of Audience Engagement and Education, Megan Dunn, says the Family Day events are usually held three times a year, but they had been on hold since September 2019 due to COVID-19.

“We’re so excited to be back! Our educators have planned a range of art and drawing games that riff off our current exhibition Every Artist, a show that features artists playing with art history.

“The Top Trumps games will be really popular and fun. Who doesn’t love Top Trumps? Kids can take a photo of themselves in the Traveling Photobooth, choose a name or nickname, or be in a team with their family.

“The categories they can select from are teamwork, bravery, art skills and LOL factor. Kids can even create and take their very own Top Trumps pack home. We have much more planned too, from a roaming performer to – weather permitting – giant bubbles outside in Civic Square.”

Here is the line-up of events happening 11am-4pm that everyone can participate in, no matter what their age:

  • Games Lounge: Make your own Top Trumps trading card, put yourself in the picture with The Amazing Traveling Photobooth, and test your skills with foosball.
  • Drawing Games: Drop into the Education Studio for some funny creativity challenges. We’ve got lots of loopy drawing games to keep folks entertained.
  • Fun and Games Films: Watch game-themed short films from Square Eyes Film Foundation. Drop by and watch one or two films or stay for the whole collection.
  • Interactive Storytime: Join us for some playful stories at 12 and 2pm.
  • Play Pal: Play a game with roaming performer Sabrina Martin. Sabrina delights in engaging audiences in site-specific theatre and play. Expect energetic games outside the entrance to the gallery and story-based games inside!
  • The Hits Prize Wall: Grab a prize from The Hits Wall between 12-2pm.
  • POP Big Bubble show: Outside the gallery in Civic Square from 12-3pm. Using a range of 6 feet tall bubble wands, Richard ‘The Bubble Man’ delights audiences young and old with 1000s of incredible bubbles during each POP Big Bubble Show.
