Your waterfront, his passion: Meet Shane Binnie, Waterfront Manager

Have you ever stopped to truly appreciate the beauty of Wellington's waterfront? From the sparkling harbour to the bustling promenades and wharves, green open spaces, playgrounds and hospitality, it's a place where memories are made. Behind the scenes, Wellington City Council's Waterfront Manager Shane Binnie is working tirelessly to keep this iconic space vibrant and safe.

A lifelong Wellington resident, Shane's connection to the waterfront runs deep.

"It's always been the crown jewel and iconic part of the city," he says, recalling childhood trips to the waterfront and witnessing the transformation of the area. Now, he's the one shaping its future.

Shane's days are anything but ordinary. He juggles everything from event planning, the upkeep of playgrounds and green spaces, maintaining strong stakeholder relationships, managing commercial operations, safety inspections, urban design to supporting large navy ships berthing at our wharves. It's a role that demands versatility and a genuine passion for the community and the waterfront itself.

"My role has a large focus on the people, with the work we do directly impacting their wellbeing and happiness," Shane explains.

Safety however is paramount. The waterfront safety enhancement project is a testament to Shane and his team's commitment to ensuring everyone can enjoy the space and make it “safe for all”. The space has changed significantly over the years and with many thousands of people drawn to the area daily. Hundreds of new lights have been installed to enhance the safety and ambience of the waterfront, and significant work is underway with edge protection.

But it's not all hard work! Shane is also an avid iPhone photographer and loves capturing the waterfront's ever-changing beauty. His photos, often shared through the Council’s social media channels, have become a beloved glimpse into our city's heart.

"Anytime of the day, any season, you see people interacting with the space in different ways," he says.

"That's why I take photos – there are always amazing angles and viewpoints. Like the harbour itself, it changes daily."

From stunning sunrises over the harbour to playful seals and penguins, Shane's photos showcase the diverse life that thrives on the waterfront. He encourages everyone to explore their favourite spots, whether it's the iconic views over Clyde Quay Marina boat sheds, or the popular lunchtime spot at Kumutoto.

"It's an incredibly special place," Shane concludes. "The responsibility of managing the space is not lost on me including the vast history and identity it holds. I hope as a result of my work, the waterfront will continue to be enjoyed by generations to come”.

Next time you stroll along the waterfront, take a moment to appreciate the dedication of people like Shane and his team, who work tirelessly to keep our city's Waterfront shining bright. And don't forget to snap a photo – you might just capture your own piece of Wellington waterfront’s magic!
