FillGood at events across Wellington

With so many exciting summer festivities happening in Pōneke, FillGood, an initiative from Sustainability Trust and a collective of partners, aims to reduce the mass amounts of single-use items by offering reusable cups, plates and trays at events.

Launching last November with support from Wellington City Council and other funders, FillGood is Wellington’s first not-for-profit reusable serviceware system.

You’ll see FillGood in action at Venues Wellington, Sky Stadium and events across the city this summer.

FillGood’s system is simple - punters can use and return durable, reusable cups, plates and trays instead of throwaway items when they buy a drink or food from a vendor.

When they are done, they simply drop their reusables into a FillGood bin.

The items are then collected, professionally washed at the brand-new purpose-built wash facility at Sky Stadium and prepared for the next event.

With a whopping 295 million disposable cups thrown away every year in Aotearoa New Zealand, Wellington City Council’s Waste Minimisation Manager Renee Rushton praises the programme for offering a practical solution to event waste.

“At the Council, we are thrilled to have this incredible service enabling events in Wellington to get even closer to zero waste. Wellingtonians are passionate about holding fantastic events and about environmental sustainability.

“FillGood is great for events of all sizes and makes it possible for Wellingtonians to party up large (or small) while eliminating the need for single use packaging! This is huge for event waste minimisation in Wellington.”

FillGood’s aim is to see reuse as standard across Wellington’s event scene and hospitality, says FillGood Programme Manager Polly Griffiths.

“We want to support making reuse the norm in the capital. Sustainability needs to be easy and accessible and FillGood is a solution that can transform the way food and drinks are served.”

As more events, more venues and more organisers adopt this system, FillGood envisions a future where sustainability is simply part of Wellington’s identity— one plate, cup, and utensil at a time.
