Hidden gems: Places to discover in Wellington

Wellington is jam-packed with lots of nature, epic views, and places to explore. Here's a list of spots to check out that you may not yet know about.

Hike through Oruaiti Reserve

Located between Worser Bay and Breaker Bay on the Miramar Peninsula is Oruaiti Reserve, which has several walking tracks, including a loop walk, and excellent views of the harbour from the ridge. This spot can be accessed from the middle of Breaker Bay Beach, the Pass of Branda or Churchill Park at Seatoun Beach.

Trek into tranquillity at Te Ara Paparārangi

Not many people know that Te Ara Paparārangi has arguably the best views of Wellington Harbour. It's a bonus that it's an easy, all ages walk along the Harbour Escarpment from Waihinahina Park in Newlands. Enjoy the tranquillity of the forest and stop at viewpoints along the way.

Enjoy a peaceful picnic at Ōtari-Wilton's Bush

Lunch in a remarkable glade surrounded by nothing but native trees and peace? Sounds like a pretty good activity we think. Barbecues are available for use and there are toilet facilities, as well as fresh tap water. Take the blue trail to find Moko, a majestic 800-year-old rimu! There's so much to explore at Ōtari-Wilton's Bush.

View over Oku Street Reserve.

Discover epic views at Oku Street Reserve

Views for days! Head to Oku Street Reserve to see over Ōwhiro Bay, Sinclair Head and, on a clear day, the Kaikōura Range in the South Island. The steps to get to the top are worth it.

Go for a swim around Karaka Bay

Around the corner from Scorching Bay Beach in the Miramar Peninsula, this spot is perfect for an after work dip and is often not as busy as other well-known Welly beaches. Lap up the warmer days with a peaceful evening swim.

Visit Central Park

This popular city park is a well-used commuter route from Brooklyn to the city. Central Park is a great mix of formal gardens, grassed areas, natural woodland and bush, making it the perfect stomping ground for those whānau days out. It also has an excellent playground with a flying fox and large play area!

Find the magical Fairy Garden

Tucked away in the Wellington Botanic Garden ki Paekākā, there is a magical Fairy Village waiting to be found. It's the perfect excuse to run away with the fairies and spend an afternoon exploring the gardens.

Stroll through Katherine Mansfield Memorial Park

Katherine Mansfield Memorial Park on Fitzherbert Terrace in Thorndon is known for its cherry blossoms, but it's also a wonderful spot all year round for a lunch-time picnic or a stroll. Take a wander in amongst the hustle and bustle in the city, or wander down the road to see the historical Katherine Mansfield house.

Get your hands dirty at Innermost Gardens

Nestled in Mt Victoria is Innermost Gardens, a peaceful community space for all to enjoy. Stop by for a stroll through the gardens, or sign up for a working bee where you can get your hands dirty.
