What you can do with your Wellington City Libraries card

Not many people know that you can use your Wellington City Libraries card for much more than taking out books! Check out some of the cool things you can do with your library card, from borrowing board games to music equipment, and even a carbon dioxide meter.

Stream movies/TV shows

Enjoy free movie streaming with your library card. Access a wide range of films and shows for your entertainment!

Access audiobooks and music 

Need music or an audiobook for your commute? Find classical, jazz, blues, world music and more on our streaming music databases, or browse our eAudiobooks.

Access our special collections

Explore special collections, including Te Reo Kete, Book Club Kete, Kurapae, music equipment, and more. Here are some of the things you can borrow:

  • Te reo kete - Books to enjoy with your whānau while you begin your te reo and tikanga Māori journey together.  
  • Memory Kete - a collection of vintage items and images to encourage conversation and reminiscence for people with dementia or memory loss.
  • Technology – there’s a range of options available from CD and DVD players to tablets
  • Carbon dioxide meter - You can borrow CO2 meters from the library to help you monitor your indoor air quality levels.
  • Boardgames - The Kēmu (game) collection consists of a range of boardgames that can be enjoyed by families, casual gamers, and more serious hobbyists alike. They’re all free to borrow and are issued for three weeks.
  • Music equipment – Playing a live or studio gig and need a PA system? Want to record a new album at home? Our Music equipment collection has you covered.
  • Sensory kete -  For all ages to help manage sensory overload. You can use it in-library or at home. Includes cross-sensory items and a mindfulness book.
  • Kurapae - Tired of waiting in long reserve queues for the most popular books? Kurapae collection (Treasure found by chance) consists of highly in-demand book titles that cannot be reserved. These are kept at Te Awe, Waitohi - Johnsonville, Te Awa-a-Taia - Ruth Gotlieb (Kilbirnie) or Te Māhanga - Karori.

Explore our eLibrary of learning resources!  Access LinkedIn Learning, Mango Languages, and more educational databases.

Print and use the internet 

Need to print a document or access a computer? You can do this at all our library locations, on our public pcs. Last year alone we had 164,715 public internet sessions and 1,177,059 pages either printed or copied at our libraries and community centres!

The Council’s temporary Arapaki Library and Service Centre on Manners Street has now closed but temporary library services will continue a short walk away, at the Te Awe site on Brandon Street. Library services will continue to be available through the Wellington City Libraries network of branches and online at the Wellington City Libraries website, and at Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui when it reopens in early 2026.
