Biannual sand shift happening next week

Wellington City Council will be shifting sand from Freyberg Beach to Oriental Bay next week for the biannual operation to maintain the size and shape of the beaches.

A yellow digger truck scooping up sand on the beach by the shoreline, with the water and land in distance behind and golden sand in foreground.

Weather permitting, the beaches will be closed to the public from Tuesday 21 to Thursday 23 May while the heavy machinery does the redistribution work.

Signage will be up, and our staff will be around to ensure public safety, and provide information and assistance if required.
