Special Matariki Our Wellington magazine out this week

The winter edition of our quarterly magazine covers the period from 16 June to 31 August 2023.

It's chock full of information and news, ways to engage with us, and a range of handy tips for Wellingtonians.

This issue focuses on the Māori New Year, when we celebrate the rising of Matariki and Puanga, which is a time to reflect on our loved ones who have passed, and to prepare for the New Year, as we enter the colder months.

Celebrate in a uniquely Wellington way with our Matariki Ahi Kā and Mana Moana Pōneke events on the waterfront. Find all the event details in the magazine, along with the city’s full schedule of events and exhibitions.

The cover, designed by David Hakaraia (Ngāpuhi and Ngā Paoa), depicts Puanga which leads Matariki up into the sky as seen from Ahumairangi Hill. The sky represents the kererū, fat from eating miro berries preceding the rising of Puanga.

In this issue, we have updates on some major infrastructure upgrades needed to make our city a better place to live, work, and play. We share the latest on Let’s Get Wellington Moving, Tākina, Wellington’s brand-new Convention and Exhibition Centre on Wakefield Street, and Te Matapihi Central Library and the historic Town Hall redevelopment projects.

Find out about the distinctive new blue niho taniwha designs that are being installed throughout Pōneke as part of the city’s bike network, and what climate action steps we’re taking as we work towards a net zero carbon future.

The winter edition also introduces Liz Kelly and Holden Hohaia, our mana whenua representatives, and features our regular pieces on playtime tips, funding opportunities, Council meetings, and how you can reach your local ward Councillors and Mayor.
