Top tips for students moving to Wellington

It can be daunting moving to a new place and trying to learn the in-and-outs of how the city works – so we’ve done the work for you!

Whether you’ve just moved to Pōneke or you’re a local Wellingtonian moving out of home for the first time, here are some useful things to know to make the most of our great city.

1. Use the rubbish and recycling directory

If you’re flatting, find out when to put your rubbish and recycling out by searching for your street in our online directory.

2. Get access to our libraries

Did you know you can get free access to all 14 libraries across the city? You just need to pop into your nearest branch to register for a library card and you’re set to go, simple as that.;

3. Find a good study spot

Need a study spot or somewhere to meet up with some mates? Check out our new inner-city community centre Te Pokapū Hapori on Manners Street – they also have schedule of fun weekly activities if you are looking for something to do.

4. Explore the city's great walks

Want to get some fresh air and explore some of Wellington’s natural beauty? We’ve got a range of great walks across the city and wider region – check them out on our website.

5. Get around using e-scooters and e-bikes

Looking for an easy way to get about? Flamingo and Beam e-scooters and e-bikes are a great option. Just download the app and find one near you. You’re also going to need a snapper card if you want to get about on our public transport – head to your nearest dairy to grab one of these. Once you’ve got one you can top it up easily on your phone with the snapper app.

6. Pick up fresh fruit and veg at the Harbourside Market

Wondering where you can get fresh fruit and vegetables? We suggest going to the Harbourside Market for some locally grown produce! It's on every Sunday from 7.30am to 2pm. While you're there, you can also grab some kai from one of the many food trucks and stalls!

7. Visit Take 10 on your next night out

Planning a night on the town? Say hello to our friends at Take 10! They're located in Courtenay Plaza and they're there to support anyone who needs it. Whether you need a phone charger, some water, a ride home or just some time to take a break from the bars and reconnect with your mates, Take 10 have you sussed.

8. Join ClubActive gym
