Rāmere Rima: Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

This week our Friday Five is a special Māori Language Week edition.
Find out how you can support and use reo Māori this wiki and beyond with these ideas from Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (Māori Language Commission).

1. Whakarongo to some waiata

A great way to celebrate te reo Māori is through music! Check out the Te Wiki o te Reo Māori playlist on Spotify or listen to Waiata Anthems and hear some of Aotearoa’s most popular songs translated into te reo.

2. Learn your mihi

Reo Māori has a simple tool to help you learn your mihi and introduce yourself in te reo Māori. It's a great skill you can use in your workplace, kura (school) or any time you meet new people. Visit the Reo Māori website to learn your mihi and start sharing it with the world.

3. Kōrero the kōrero (talk the talk)

Try to encorporate te reo into your daily conversation. Whether that’s ordering your morning kawhe (coffee), saying hello to your collegues, answering the phone or thanking the bus driver. Check out more ideas on the Māori Language Commission website.

4. Host a reo Māori Kahoots quiz

What better way to bring everyone together during Level 2 (or Level 4 if you’re in Auckland) than a virtual quiz night! Invite your whānau or workmates and test your te reo knowledge with this Kahoots quiz for beginners. All you’ll need is internet and a device.

5. Keep it up for the whole marama

Why just celebrate te reo for one week? Take the Mahura Māori challenge and kōrero te reo Māori for the whole month of September! For more information and to take the challenge, visit the Mahura Māori website

Watch out each Friday for a fun list of five great activities to do, places to explore, or things to discover in our awesome city (depending on our Alert Level!)
