This work ensures roads and footpaths are safe and in good condition to meet the demands of a busy and growing city.
From this week until March 2020 around 70 km of roads at 227 locations will be resurfaced as part of Wellington City Council’s annual road maintenance programme.
The work has been scheduled to cause the least disruption, and where possible some will be done at quieter times such as during school holidays, at night, or outside of commuter travel times. Residents will be kept informed of work via letters from contractors and on-site signage.
The Council’s Transport and Infrastructure Manager Siobhan Procter says this is important safety, road repair and maintenance work.
“Well looked after roads and footpaths help keep people safe, the city moving and our roads last longer. This maintenance work also helps keep the cost of providing this essential work to Wellington ratepayers as low as possible.
“Our hard-working contractors do their best to carry out this work with least disruption. At times this isn’t possible and short delays should be expected, including because of weather.
“Our thanks to directly-affected residents and businesses and the travelling public for their patience while this critical work is done.”
The Council asks drivers and people walking and on bikes to take extra care as they travel through road works, keep to reduced speed limits and to look out for people working.
“Our contractors who are helping to keep our city moving are often working only a metre away from fast-moving traffic and will always come off second best in the event of a vehicle straying into the work site,” says Siobhan.
This work is done over the summer months as the warmer air and road surface helps the new seal better stick to the road. Wet weather and other factors can delay roadworks, with work rescheduled to the next dry work day.
The major resealing work starting in October is:
• Newlands Road – Black Rock Road to Newlands Road/Bracken Road roundabout
• Aro Street – Willis Street to Devon Street
• Grafton Road – Maida Vale Road to Palliser Road
• Onslow Road – Hutt Road to Benares Street.
