This follows indications overnight that the large numbers of people intending to attend the vigil would cause capacity problems at Te Ngākau Civic Square – the original intended venue.
“The Basin Reserve has become available overnight – it has more than enough room for everyone wanting to attend,” says the Mayor.
He says the vigil will give Wellingtonians the opportunity to show their support for the victims and their families, our Muslim community and all citizens of Christchurch.
The event has been organised by Wellington City Council in partnership with Wellington Interfaith Council, the Wellington Multicultural Council and ChangeMakers Resettlement Forum.
There will be free on-street parking in the CBD from 4pm today.
