Rules around fireworks and bonfires in Wellington

Fireworks are dangerous and pose a fire risk. Please ensure you are using them safely.

Fireworks in public places

Fireworks are not to be let off in public spaces, this includes beaches, reserves, parks and sports fields.

Fireworks can be let off on private property but must not be left off at a time that causes stress or concern to any member of the public.

Noise control

Fireworks are not covered under noise control, as they are explosives – dangerous use should be reported to the police and/or fire service.

Bonfires / open fires

Bonfires / open fires are not allowed in public places without a Fire Permit, these are issued by Fire and Emergency NZ. Beach permits will only be issued for Houghton Bay and Princess Bay beaches.

Park Rangers may permit an open fire in a public place for events and/or cultural reasons in accordance with the Wellington Consolidated Bylaw. Contact the Park Rangers at parkranger@wcc.govt.nz.

Person(s) lighting open fires without a fire permit on Council managed land including our beaches may result in their bonfire being put out by the fire service, and a possible fine.
